SMF Batteries

SMF (Sealed Maintenance Free) batteries also known as the Value Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA) batteries are the flat plate batteries that do not require topping-up and normally do not emit any fumes or gases on a continuous basis.

Advantages of SMF Batteries

Beyond the concept of maintenance-free, several key advantages to SMF batteries exist. Among the more important are:

• Can be oriented in any direction

• No fumes or smell

• Can be installed in equipment before transport (Gel types)

• Economical

There is no need to worry about installing them next to electric equipment or in enclosed rooms. Lead fumes from other types can be harmful to health and potentially explosive. SMF battery life cycle runs from three to five years or longer with good care.

Applications of SMF Batteries

A sealed battery finds its way into many uses, and the different sizes and powers of the SMF make it the perfect choice for many applications. Some of the more common uses for an SMF battery include:

Please refer to your vehicle and battery owners’ manual to safely handle your lead-acid battery. Lead-acid batteries contain hydrogen-oxygen gases that can be explosive. Also, leakage of sulfuric acid can cause severe burns. Here are some precautions:

• Wear safety glasses or goggles and a face shield
• Make sure the work area is well-ventilated
• Keep the battery out of children’s reach
• Keep vent caps tight and level
• In the event of an accident, flush with water and call a physician immediately
• Never lean over the battery while boosting, testing or charging it
• Keep all ignition sources like cigarettes, flames, and sparks that could cause the battery to explode away from it
• Do not charge, use booster cables or adjust post connections without proper instructions and training
• Avoid metallic contact across the terminals as this can result in short circuit and sparking (remove comma)

Safe disposal of old batteries

Govt. of India has notified Batteries Management Handling Rules, 2001 under the Environment Protection (Amendment) Act 1986 to channelize used lead acid batteries to registered/ authorized recyclers and ensure an environmentally safe & sound recycling.
